The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) serves as a framework for boosting intra-African trade and developing intra-regional value chains by unlocking the continent’s business potential. The International Trade Centre (ITC) estimates that intra-African trade has the potential to increase by $22 billion as of 2025.

Tariff liberalization and trade facilitation, to be achieved under the AfCFTA, can boost regional value chains and create incentives for investments from third parties into the African continent.

ITC, mandated by the Directorate-General for International Partnership of the European Commission, implemented a value chain diagnostic to identify sectors with high potential for sustainable value chain development in Africa and bottlenecks preventing businesses from fully realizing this potential, and developed recommendations on how to overcome obstacles and take advantage of existing opportunities.

This high-level event will discuss the approach and findings of the value chain diagnostic and allow members of the business community and institutions supporting businesses to share their view on what is needed to develop and strengthen regional value chains in Africa.

An Action Plan for developing and strengthening key regional value chains

The AU Extraordinary Summit on industrialisation and economic diversification scheduled in Niamey, on 20-25 November, will see the official launch of the regional value chain diagnostic, validated by the AU competent organs, and will convene for the occasion a representation of African business and stakeholders. Under the steering of AUC ETTIM in the framework of the Steering committee on regional value chains and with the support of the EU and multilateral cooperation partners, a dedicated Action Plan for developing and strengthening key RVCs at continental scale is developed.

The workshop “Developing and strengthening key regional value chains at continental scale in Africa”, held in Niamey, AUC ETTIM and EC INTPA DG, will convene policy makers, experts, partners and stakeholders.

The objective of the workshop is four-fold:

1.  Raising awareness on the need for strengthening RVCs in Africa as a response to the disruption of global supply chains and promoting industrialization for Boosting Intra-African Trade;

2.  Communicating widely the achievements on developing a continental methodology for RVC identification and development to relevant actors, stakeholders and cooperating partners;

3.  Ensuring that the continental Action Plan on key RVC benefit from its inception from a broad information and consultation process; and

4.  Sensitize and engage the workshop attendees about the importance of exploring synergies, maintain good communication and co-coordinate efforts for bringing about sustainable industrialisation and economic diversification through a RVC approach, including by taking advantage of existing platforms such as the AU Steering Committee on RVC, the EU-Africa Business Forum, as well as dedicated business-to-business or government-to-business events.
