Training of Trainers on Non-Tariff Measures and Market Access 

3 - 5 December 2019 and 10 - 14 February 2020, Niamey, Niger

Background

In the context of the Programme on Non-Tariffs Measures ‘Tackling the Invisible Barriers to Trade’ in Niger, International Trade Centre conducted a Training of Trainers on ‘NTMs and Market Access: key concepts and information tools’. This high-level training was delivered over two 5-days sessions in December 2019 and February 2020.

In the first session, participants were capacitated on key concepts of Market Access through in-depth sessions on customs tariffs, rules of origin, SPS and TBT regulations, as well as exercises through ITC online information tools Market Access Map and Rules of Origin Facilitator.

In the second session, candidates demonstrated their acquired expertise through individual presentations and a study of their training application plan in 2020.

Network of trainers

Fifteen participants from various trade support institution in Niger attended the workshop. They come from the public sector (Ministry of Trade and Promotion of the Private Sector, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Industry, National Institute of Statistics), private sector associations (Niger Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Borderless Alliance, Nigerien Export Promotion Agency) and other international organizations, such as United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Ten participants have qualified to obtain certification as ITC trainer on ‘NTMs and Market Access : key concepts and information tools’. This network of trainers is now available to support the private sector on improving their knowledge on trade regulations and procedure to take better data-driven decisions regarding exports.

This capacity-building activity was made possible by the support of Government of Denmark coordinated by the Department of Foreign Trade of the Minister of Trade and Private Sector’ Promotion.
